A World of Darkness
A glossary of terms used in Vampire: the Masquerade.
Archhbishop A title held by a Sabbat vampire who has claimed a given expanse of domain as his own, generally a city, and supports that claim against all others. The term can refer to a cainite of either sex.
Bishop A title held by a Sabbat vampire, who serves or advises an Archbishop, or a vampire who maintains Sabbat influence in a city with aid of others of equal status.
Camarilla The Camarilla is the largest of vampiric sects, a loose organization which ostensibly represents and protects all vampires by enforcing and promulgating the Masquerade. It is currently composed of seven clans, though officially it considers all Kindred under its purview and welcomes any that obey its laws.
Cardinal A title held by a Sabbat vampire who oversees sect affairs in large geographical regions.
Ductus A title held by a Sabbat vampire who acts as the leader of an individual pack, which is more a position of honor than one of responsibility.
Pack Priest A title held by a Sabbat vampire. They are the leaders of the sect’s ritae in a given pack.
Primogen A term used to describe Camarilla officials that, at least in theory, serve as the representatives of their respective clans to the Prince of a city ruled by the sect. The term is both singular and plural, and refers to both individual representatives and to the Primogen council as a whole.
Prince A vampire who has claimed leadership over a Domain, usually a single city. They possess the authority of an Elder as described in the Traditions.
Priscus A Priscus is an advisor to the local Sabbat authority figures, with no formal role in sect politics but great practical influence.
Regent A title held by the Sabbat vampire who has the ultimate authority over the entire sect, ruling it from the Sabbat stronghold in Mexico City.
Ritae The Auctoritas Ritae are a collection of thirteen rituals practiced by all members of the Sabbat. While the Ignobilis Ritae are optional to a point, Auctoritas Ritae are upheld in a manner similar to the theological commandments given by Moses to the Hebrews. They are held with zealous fever and generally observed on a very casual base.
Sabbat A loose organization of Cainites who reject the Traditions. Unlike the Camarilla, the Sabbat believes in the Antediluvians and Caine. Also known as the Sword of Caine, as they believe they will be the army Caine will use to destroy the Antediluvians once Gehenna arrives.
